I’m still mad with P’s transition to K1. He is still in the same school. He attended this school since he was 20 months old.
When he was in Pre-School (4yo), they have school work. Work to be done in school like writing, coloring, simple activities like matching, connecting the dots. During the school holidays, they were given homework. However the homework was OPTIONAL. Yes, the teacher told me, no force. If he wants to do it, let him. If not, it does not matter. The homework is not graded or checked!
Then comes K1 (5yo). Suddenly, OVERNIGHT, this kid gets TONS of homework. How can he cope? He gets homework for Math, English, Malay and Chinese, besides revision for Ejaan, Ting She and Spelling! Furthermore, this is the first year P is exposed to Chinese Medium instruction. THIS IS WAY TO STRESSFUL right???
I think the school failed to transition the kids to k1 properly. I believe, they should not “SUDDENLY” put too much expectations to the kids. Or they just had to beef up their pre-school sylabbus. I mean, if you want to give homework, give them gradually.
So now, the mom (me) is stressful as I need to ensure P finishes his homework. Now I pass this responsibility to his afternoon teacher. This afternoon teacher will ensure he finishes his homework as well as preparing for his weekly spelling/pop quiz. Now, come every Friday, the kids will go home with MORE HOMEWORK (due to weekend) and sometimes P cannot finish the homework at school. So he brings home. and I have to threaten him in order to get it done. He is starting to have the “TIDAK APA ATTITUDE”. Dont do ar..nevermind-la. !@#$%.
I started to think.. Now is just the beginning of school. Come middle or end of the year, will I continue to drop more hair? Furthermore I have been thinking should I send him for more tuition or enrichment classes…
Stress~~~
This shot was taken before the “threaten”! Watches TV, IPAD and DOING HOMEWORK
Ps: btw, his fav channel is 613

Oh my… definitely too early to have this kind of stress! This is a private school so no excuse to have badly-planned transactions (for government schools, I am kinda resigned to the fact that we have to just accept whatever).
The hard part is to keep P interested in school and learning!
so much homework in K1? Ashley only started getting homework when she was in K2. And they also only started spelling in K2 too. The workload sounds so stressful for Philip.
gosh…when my kids were 4 years old/5… they were still having the time of their lives.. meaning.. not much homework.. and lots of home activities… (but no computer, ipad.. etc… home activities means playing with their own toys or running about, making noise) hahaha..
wei, only 5 yo…give him a break. Imagine he will have to do 12 years of heavy homework if you send him to Chinese school. Let him enjoy while he can.
oh agreed the transition is a bit weak. As for Chinese, emm not easy to recognize and write. That why my girl kinder start introduce on 4yo, Malay on 5yo (as it’s still writing in alphabet) Malay would be easily after the kids learnt phonic for English. By the time K1, the student have well prepare for homework & spelling. Yes they have homework in 4yo but not many. Many you can start reward him if he able to finish all his homework. Scolding too much will make him hate to do it.
I’m going ‘crazy’ guiding my son to do homework starting this year also… sigh~
From no homework to too much homework is not only hard on the child but the parents too. Although Chloe has minimal homework, she also has the tidak apa attitude which drives me up the wall. She’s not interested in doing her Chinese homework (other subjects ok) until I have to threaten her and raise my voice. I’m beginning to question my choice of sending her to a SRJK now… sigh!
ya, I think it is too much for K1. its probably good he has a tidak apa attitude… otherwise he will be really stressed! they will learn to get stressed and do their work once they are older in high school, when it really counts!
did u ask P’s preschool if they are following the NEW KSSR syllabus in Chinese Primary 1? Kids are not suppose to have so much homework and QQ (first year of KSSR and now she is in Std 2) also only comes back with one homework and sometimes none.
Too stressed la…belum masuk Primary sudah stress to the max for no reason like that. I suspect his school wasnt aware of the syllabus change and still think that kids has a lot to do today.
homework is too many for a young boy ….. did you voice out to the school? What is the response? hopefully Phillip can adapt to his new environment soon ..

Wah ….. quite enjoy leh doing homework with that! Can he even concentrate with the TV on??? Ghheeee …..
But how come he got so many homework ah? Does he complain? I am glad that although Angel have homework but still manageable and 1 day the most is 2 homework and sometimes non. Is the school in KL like that?
Yeah….I think the sudden change this year was also too drastic. I now have to think 4/5 times before I let him skip school. Else teacher force him to finish up the work the poor boy will start to hate school.
Sounds so darn stressful. I pity kids these days. So much pressure.
